Attached is the slide deck from the November 1st club meeting on HDR by Bob Davis.  The mini slideshow of "others" images and live demo are not included due to size.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Bob Davis through the club.  I'm also placing links to the free HDR software talked about at the meeting.   To start the presentation, click the first slide and you'll see a play button in the gadget below.

Sunny Day Project #1 - Oil and Water

posted Sep 14, 2011 12:19 PM by Bob Davis

This would have actually been number one rainy day project, but you need sun and I hadn't moved it over from the old site until now so ...  Thanks again Bev !

Instructions

You need a bright sunny day or bright light to shine into the bowl. I used a glass baking dish filled about half way with water and two glasses to stand my bowl up on. Use a variety of papers (gift wrapping, flyers, gift bags etc.) for under the bowl/glasses to get different effects.

I tried both canola (lavender photo) and olive oil (orange/gold photo) for my shots. I found the canola oil more opaque and clumped together rather quickly. The olive oil seemed to work better but whichever you use don’t use too much or you’ll end up with one large glob, just a little is needed.

Gently swirl the oil and as it is slowing/settling focus in on the globs. These can be done with any lens and manual setting, I used my 17 -70 mm lens. Keep in mind to try and use a bowl that doesn’t have a stamp or scratches on the bottom as these will show on your photo and what you use to support the bowl up will also show. Be warned these are very addictive once you get the hang of it!!

Enjoy

Rainy Day Project #1 - Asbtract Milk ...

posted Sep 14, 2011 7:29 AM by Bob Davis   [ updated Sep 14, 2011 8:11 AM ]

Sometimes all it takes is an idea to start the gears whirring.  Looking for something to do on a rainy day ?  Thanks to Bev England for sharing this idea.  The results are impressive.

These images were done using a high fat milk with food coloring and dish liquid. The dish liquid "moves" the fat (rather quickly!) and this moves the food coloring around in the milk and leaving some striations in the milk.

For the examples shown below there is no off camera lighting so I’m sure if you did or a soft box the lighting would be much better.  Use a minimal amount of both coloring and dish liquid as it soon becomes mud. Place the coloring in first, get your focus and drop the dish liquid in....shoot quickly and have fun !
